What’s Up?

by pastortimfowler

I am sure that many of you are wondering what’s up? I have posted very few blogs in the last 2 weeks. For those who don’t know, we had a fire at the church. Of course you should know this because I wrote about it. Things are hectic and on top of that, “normal” church business goes on and I have had a close friend in the hospital ICU this week. So, with no office to work out of and my house full of kids who would normally be in the nursery at church, it has been difficult to blog. And now for the pity part of it, I am sitting in the park in 40 degree temps, writing a blog. Okay, it is actually not that cold and I love this beautiful fall weather, but show the pity anyway.
We will have church Sunday. The clean up of our worship area will be complete today. The other side, where classrooms and offices are, will be at least another couple of weeks before they can be used.
I have also found out how important it is to leave things where you last put them. Many have been calling me asking where things are that have been moved by the guys who are cleaning. I have not been there to watch the whole thing, nor could I have been if I wanted too. When I ask he crew where things are they just point to another person who does the same. In their defense, there have been as many as twenty people working in the same area this week and many things were sent out for cleaning. My feeling is that most everything we will need or are looking for has been sent out. The good news is that for the next few weeks we can blame everything that goes wrong on Sunday on the fire.
I would normally be rather stressed about these things, but I have been given a great peace about it all. It is like God is saying, “Chill…I got this.” So who am I to argue with God? Of course Sunday morning when what I need comes up under the category of unfound and missing, then I will start stressing. But something just keeps telling me that it is going to be a great Sunday. On top of Sunday being expected to be awesome, I am excited about Monday. My brother from the Philippines is coming into town and we are going to send him off to his family with a night of worship.
I love it when Satan thinks he can knock you down only to knock you back into the arms of God. I love it when everything that goes wrong turns around to be alright and what many would see as a curse turns out to be a blessing. I love it when the fire of this world smokes up everything and you find out that at the same time the fire from God was purifying and strengthening His people. I love it when someone who has every right to complain and be bitter, gives you the biggest smile and hug and tells you how awesome God is. I love it when friends that you thought may have forgotten you, turn out to be the first to call and the most help to those in need.
Like I said before, the enemy can only stir the battle, but Jesus Christ has given the victory! The enemy can burn a building, but my God is a consuming fire! His fire consumes sin, cleanses His people, and destroys the enemy.
Thanks to all who have been praying. Thanks to all who have been understanding and patient. And to all who are looking for stuff, it will be found or replaced. But as far as this Sunday goes, don’t let anything bother you. God has some blessings waiting for you.

DNC

by pastortimfowler

Democratic Donkey - 3D Icon

So I heard today that the DNC is not going to use the Panther’s stadium for the president’s acceptance speech. The reasoning, they say, is because of the weather and more specifically, the threat of rain. I live twenty minutes south of Charlotte and can vouch for the lousy weather we have been having lately. It has rained more this summer than the last five summers combined. Our pool has been overflowing for weeks because of the downpours. We have seen storms come through that have dumped two and three inches of rain in an hour. So I can’t say that I blame them for the decision, even though the forecast for Thursday evening is only for a 30% chance of rain. But if that 30% gives us the same type of rain we have been having, it would be a mess.
I do not think that they were going to be able to fill the stadium though, even if the weather was clear. It was being configured to seat about 65,000 people and there have not been that many people in that stadium in a long time. Even when the Panthers play, they struggle to fill every seat, and they have Cam Newton. And lets face it, Cam Newton is much more fun to watch than a bunch of politicians. But the president is not the “rock star” he was in 2008 and they couldn’t fill it. So moving it was a wise move on both account, weather and attendance.
In a bold move, the DNC decided to move the last night of the convention to the Bobcat’s basketball arena where the rest of the convention has been taking place. Now except for the convention, here is a place that has not been full in a while. Not since the Hornets left has the Charlotte basketball team been able to fill the arena that they play at. Perhaps the President could come back to Charlotte during basketball season and really help out some people who are struggling.
The streets of Charlotte have been full of news media and delegates all looking for the next big story. The occupy movement has set up their camps and the unions have set up theirs. There are people who like the president protesting and people who don’t like him who are protesting. Meanwhile the 24 hour news cycle has not mentioned the rising unemployment rate of the host city and state. They have not mentioned the overwhelming waste of money to get a light rail system in place while an unfinished interstate loop has been dormant for years. They did not mention that gas prices in NC are about twenty cents higher than in my state just a few miles away and it is all because of taxes being so much higher in NC. They also did not mention that this president is the only living president not to visit the Billy Graham Museum that is located in Charlotte. After all, Billy Graham could fill any stadium.
But the big news will be that Charlotte NC hosted the DNC and in that I congratulate them. Charlotte is a great place to visit if you can get into the city. Most of the roads going in are closed for the next few days. But afterwards, you should visit. There is great things to do and it is easy to get a ticket to the major sports activities for now. But keep this in mind; Cam is better and if the Panthers start to win, the stadium will fill up, even if it rains.

Warm Weather

by pastortimfowler

Today in my neck of the woods it is a beautiful 80 degrees and sunny. Not bad for mid March in the south. There are all kinds of things that start happening as the warm weather begins. Today I am cutting the clover and onions and the patches of grass that are sprouting up. I really don’t mind cutting grass. It is a great time to not have to answer the phone if it rings and to do some thinking and praying. Most of the prayers end up asking God to eventually kill the grass and things that grow in my yard and replace them with cement.
After the grass is cut I am going to spray the weeds that grow through the concrete and pavement, reminding me that even if God answered my prayer, I would still have to cut grass and weeds. I have places in my yard where I have planted grass seed and fertilized the soil and watered it regularly and still have no grass. But everywhere I have cement or pavement, grass grows through it. I guess that I should just enjoy the time of no phone calls.
Next I will be spreading granules that are supposed to stop fire-ants and other bugs like fleas from taking over the yard. They work to keep the bugs down, but certainly don’t keep them away for the whole season. I already have more fire ant hills than I can count, so I have to treat them too with a fast acting granule. As I walk through the yard spreading this stuff I have to dodge bees. I don’t like bees and sadly there is not a spray for them that I can use to keep them away. While I am sitting on my back porch typing out this blog, I have had 3 wasps land on my leg and 4 bumble bees break the sound barrier as they flew past my head. So far I have not seen my worst enemy, the yellow jacket. Of all the creatures that God made, I dislike them the most.
If and when I get all this done I am going to get the motorcycle out and clean it up. Riding it for the first time in a few months is always exciting. I can enjoy the breeze in my face and the pollen being forced up my nose and if I am really lucky take out a few bees with my windshield. For some reason bugs have a way of finding their way around it to hit me in the arms, legs, and face. I don’t really mind because I enjoy the ride far too much to let little things like that bother me.
Warm weather always makes me glad that I live in the south. While so much of the country can still see snow or cold, we get to say good-bye to it a few weeks earlier. That means I can work on my farmer’s tan and get the sunburn out-of-the-way. Soon the wife will be laying out in her beach attire dreaming of the ocean and the sand and I get to enjoy the view! I love warm weather!
Now back to the yard work.

I Complain Too Much

by pastortimfowler

Yesterday my phone rang and the person on the other end asked how I was doing and I responded I am hot and I sure wish it were cooler. Just a few days ago I was complaining because it was so cool and for mid to late May I was ready for warmer weather. Today I was moving some lumber for a family member and was murmuring about how hot it was and that this was going to be a long summer. Earlier in the year we had a shot of winter that gave us snow and blustery winds and I complained about how cold it was and then as the weather mellowed and we did not get anymore snow, I complained because we didn’t get more snow than we had and said that if it was going to be warm it might as well go ahead and get hot for the summer.
I love being in the south. We get just enough of each season to say we have four seasons and I love the changes and love certain aspects of each season, but I always find something to complain about when it comes to the weather. There is something in all of us, I think, that gets us complaining when it comes to the weather. As much as we like the good, it doesn’t take much to make us turn negative.
It is a beautiful day today. It is hot, but I really do like it hot. It means I can ride my motorcycle, I can go fishing, I can sit under the shade of a tree and sip something cold to drink while I read or blog. I am not sure why I complained earlier about the weather. I really want to look into why I complain too much.
