Some thoughts about Exodus

Charlton Heston as Moses

I am reading through the Bible again for the umpteenth time and I am amazed that it never gets old or boring. I do get the urge to run out and rent ‘The Ten Commandments” when I get to where I am now, Exodus. My mind still sees Charlton Heston’s face as I read about Moses and that bald guy as Pharaoh.
I remember as a child watching the movie thinking how awesome it must have been to walk through the Red Sea on dry land and then see the enemy crushed as the waters came back into place. I would have loved to had been there and have a rod and reel. I am sure they were seeing some big fish. But how would you cast to them? Would you first have to throw up to the top of the water and have it sink down or could you throw it through the wall of water at the fish you were seeing?
Exodus tells us that God led the people during the day as a column of smoke and at night a pillar of fire. Every day they saw this and yet every time a challenge came up they whined and complained as if God was nowhere to be found. I don’t know about you but I have never seen a column of smoke or a pillar of fire following me or leading me ever. I saw a dust devil a few times and chased it but I am pretty sure it wasn’t God.
Through 40 years they never had to worry about food, water, or clothes, and no enemies that could threaten them without getting wiped out. Some think that eating the same food every day would have been tough but I think I could have handled that part. I eat the same cereal for breakfast every day for months and the same sandwich for lunch for weeks. I have been drinking Propel for years now and could handle wearing the same clothes that long. The other day I put on a shirt that I have for over 20 years. It still fit and I thought it looked fine. But 40 years is a long time and never needing to worry about any of these things for that long is pretty awesome.
We all know the Ten Commandments were given to Moses during this time. Moses was given more than that but that is all we get out of it. I guess if they had named the movie “Laws that Cover Everything From How to Worship to How to Manage Your Crops and Anything in Between” would not have as great of an appeal.
Here is the problem…even with only ten of them we don’t know them and can’t keep them. God makes it quite easy to figure this out too. The first one is to not have anything as god above Him. Most people say they don’t break this, but rarely give as much to God as they do their cable provider each month.
I could go on for a while about this incredible book of the Bible, but I don’t want to give away the ending. You really should read it for yourself. And I would even suggest watching the movie if you have never seen it. Charlton Heston looks exactly like Moses!
