Voter ID

I try to stay away from political stuff when I blog, but this is a subject that I think defies logic. Voter ID requirements seem to be a source of conflict. I just don’t understand it and here is why. From what I understand, the argument against requiring an ID to vote is about people who may be poor or live a long way from a place that issues IDs and therefore it is a hardship on them and risks disenfranchising them. If that were the case, I can see the point of the argument, but something about that does not make sense.
Voting is not something that everyone can do. You must be 18 to vote. You must not be a convicted felon. You must be a legal US citizen. You must live in certain districts to vote on certain races like county and city races. Without some form of ID, several of these requirements can not be verified. I think if the laws are on the books they should be enforced. I do not want a bunch of 15-year-old kids deciding the local school board or the president of the US. I don’t want someone who lives in another county deciding who represents me on the county council. I don’t want someone who is not a citizen of this country deciding who is our president. Call me crazy, but I can see the reasoning behind these laws.
But my argument is not against the laws, but against the logic of how difficult is is to get an ID for some people. I know that there are some in society who have a more difficult time than others when it comes to matters like this. It does not matter the race of the person, it is a matter most often of health, wealth (or the lack of), and age. I know these things can make doing anything more difficult. But here is my question, how long does it take to get an ID if you need one? Even if it were to take months or even a year, elections don’t come around that often and we know that most state and national elections happen every two years. Even under the worst cases, with that much time, and knowing the law requires it, anyone could get proper ID.
And what about other laws that require ID. For instance, you must be 18 to purchase those evil cigarettes. Every store that I have ever been to in the last 10 years says that they ID everyone before they will sell them a pack of cigarettes. Sure, if you are an 80-year-old man, you can buy them without an ID. Common sense says that he is older than 18, but what about that poor person who is in a wheel chair who wants a pack of cigarette and he is 18. Do they have to show an ID? Is that okay? Is it discrimination? That person has to have a proper ID and from what I remember, people purchase cigarettes quite often and I do not remember anyone ever claiming that proper ID to purchase cigarettes or alcohol as being disenfranchised.
I have to show proper ID to get the power in my house turned on, board a plane, drive my car, get into some buildings, catch fish or shoot deer and any number of other things that happen daily. But for some reason, getting an ID to vote, something that happens at best, annually, and something that has definite consequences if abused, is looked upon as evil and even racist by some. Try to get into a labor union meeting without proper ID. Try to get into a nightclub without proper ID. Try to get into Canada without proper ID. It won’t happen. Quit trying to vote without one.

Celebrity Stupidity

by pastortimfowler

The Freedom of Speech

Everyone loves a celebrity. We seek their autograph, their picture, and if you are running for public office, you seek their endorsement. But this brings to mind the old saying, be careful what you ask for, you just might get it.
Today I read about Madonna, (and I thought that she was a has been but I guess she is still a celebrity), and her endorsement of the president for the upcoming election. OUCH! She called him a black Muslim. She should thank her star on the famous Broadway walk that she is not a Republican who said something like that. Why she would be ran out-of-town. But, she is a not and she can say whatever she wants too and not have much backlash. But let me go on record as saying that I think her remarks are absolutely ridiculous and that she should apologize to the president and to the country. I will wait patiently.
Why does she have to call him black? He is our president. I never refer to any president as white or black or Hispanic or any other ethnicity. Is she a racist? If I were to call him black and criticize him I would be called a racist. Does she think that people are stupid? It is obvious that he is not green or blue. I thought that people were people and the color of their skin did not matter. At least that is how I was raised in my middle-income home with white parents and siblings. FYI…we had a cat that was black.
But, Madonna has said stupid stuff in the past and got away with it and it is her right as an American, even though she is white, to say what ever she wants. Freedom of speech does not limit stupid speech and her speech has been stupid at times. But as a celebrity, when she says something, people listen, even if it is offensive to one group or another.
Would it matter if the president was a Muslim? He says that he is a Christian and that doesn’t seem to be a problem. The Republican candidate says that he is a Mormon and I really don’t care. I want to have a president who stands for all Americans of every race and religion. If the president was a Muslim, he would still be the president that was sworn to uphold the constitution of the USA. Does being a Muslin or a Christian or a Jew or a Mormon, or an atheist change that? I hope not and don’t think so.
So why did Madonna say that the president was a black Muslim? The only conclusion that I can come to is that I can think of is that celebrity stupidity is still a part of free speech and as offensive as it may be and as stupid as it may be, she has a right to say whatever she wants in this great country that has great men who serve as president no matter what color they were born or what religion they follow.
GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

DNC

by pastortimfowler

Democratic Donkey - 3D Icon

So I heard today that the DNC is not going to use the Panther’s stadium for the president’s acceptance speech. The reasoning, they say, is because of the weather and more specifically, the threat of rain. I live twenty minutes south of Charlotte and can vouch for the lousy weather we have been having lately. It has rained more this summer than the last five summers combined. Our pool has been overflowing for weeks because of the downpours. We have seen storms come through that have dumped two and three inches of rain in an hour. So I can’t say that I blame them for the decision, even though the forecast for Thursday evening is only for a 30% chance of rain. But if that 30% gives us the same type of rain we have been having, it would be a mess.
I do not think that they were going to be able to fill the stadium though, even if the weather was clear. It was being configured to seat about 65,000 people and there have not been that many people in that stadium in a long time. Even when the Panthers play, they struggle to fill every seat, and they have Cam Newton. And lets face it, Cam Newton is much more fun to watch than a bunch of politicians. But the president is not the “rock star” he was in 2008 and they couldn’t fill it. So moving it was a wise move on both account, weather and attendance.
In a bold move, the DNC decided to move the last night of the convention to the Bobcat’s basketball arena where the rest of the convention has been taking place. Now except for the convention, here is a place that has not been full in a while. Not since the Hornets left has the Charlotte basketball team been able to fill the arena that they play at. Perhaps the President could come back to Charlotte during basketball season and really help out some people who are struggling.
The streets of Charlotte have been full of news media and delegates all looking for the next big story. The occupy movement has set up their camps and the unions have set up theirs. There are people who like the president protesting and people who don’t like him who are protesting. Meanwhile the 24 hour news cycle has not mentioned the rising unemployment rate of the host city and state. They have not mentioned the overwhelming waste of money to get a light rail system in place while an unfinished interstate loop has been dormant for years. They did not mention that gas prices in NC are about twenty cents higher than in my state just a few miles away and it is all because of taxes being so much higher in NC. They also did not mention that this president is the only living president not to visit the Billy Graham Museum that is located in Charlotte. After all, Billy Graham could fill any stadium.
But the big news will be that Charlotte NC hosted the DNC and in that I congratulate them. Charlotte is a great place to visit if you can get into the city. Most of the roads going in are closed for the next few days. But afterwards, you should visit. There is great things to do and it is easy to get a ticket to the major sports activities for now. But keep this in mind; Cam is better and if the Panthers start to win, the stadium will fill up, even if it rains.
